about a two or three years ago, we stumbled across the local la panadería mexicana (Mexican bakery) in Newport News. it is next door to Luigi's Italian Restaurant on Warwick Blvd. at the first visit, we were slightly disappointed in the bakery selection, however pleasantly surprised to find some other convenience store treasures we had grown to love during our visits in Mexico.
Since this past weekend, I have been on a mission to make gallo pinto for the cinco de mayo party at work tomorrow. gallo pinto is literally translated as "spotted rooster" and commonly known as rice and beans in costa rica. during our trip to costa rica about a month ago, we were introduced to a special costa rican sauce called Salsa Lizano. i have been less than successful finding it in our local area after visiting World Market, Fresh Market, Trader Joes, Farm Fresh, and Fresh World (who have permanently closed). So today, I decided to visit la panadería mexicana to see if they happened to carry this salsa. I was unsuccessful finding the salsa but happen to strike the jackpot with the bakery. What you need to know is that when you walk into this place, it just looks like a small mexican convenience store, however, the goodies - the fresh baked pastries and bread - are hiding in the back. there were at least 10 bakers racks full of fresh pastries and bread. this little la panadería mexicana bakes and delivers these delicious treats to other la panaderías mexicana in Richmond, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and other localities. Here is a small selection of what they offered:

what a treat. i am SO excited to find this gold mine of fresh mexican pastries and bread.
i guess my excitement was evident to the manager/owner of this bakery, who proceeded to ask me, in her sweet mexican accent and broken english, if my intersted in these pastries was because I married a mexican boy!? i kindly said no, but explained how much we had traveled to latin america and how WONDERFUL these pastries are. these are truly a treat and nothing like the pastries and baked goods in even the best american bakery.
